Analysing Large Fabricated Structures

Meshed crane model

Cranes and lifting equipment pose a unique problem when considered in a finite element analysis. Their sheer size often prevents users from analysing these structures using regular solid elements. Instead, beam elements must be used to reduce the model to a manageable size. The problem with this approach, however, lies in the process of extracting beam elements from the original solid CAD geometry. Meshing and model solution are other issues which may arise if the wrong tools are chosen for the job. The video below outlines the considerations that should be made when preparing for the analysis of large fabricated structures. Luckily, ANSYS provides advanced solutions to address common issues encountered throughout a typical FE workflow for cranes and lifting equipment.   Geometry Clean-up and…

Bulk Materials Handling & Heavy Lifting Equipment

Large scale reclaimer assembly which will be analysed using ANSYS

Designing equipment intended for use in the bulk material handling industry is no simple task. Engineers need to consider day to day operating conditions as well as unpredictable loadings such as user error/misuse and erratic weather conditions. Simulation software can optimise machine design and gives engineers the capability to decrease project budgets/timeframes and minimise the loss of raw materials through reduced equipment maintenance and wear. Traditional design methods involve “rule of thumb” guidelines based upon knowledge acquired through collective experience which, although “tried and true”, raise several problems: Hand/spreadsheet calculations are repetitive, every time a design change is made these calculations must be re-evaluated. This manual process requires significant time investment over the duration of a design project as the design progresses through multiple iterations….

Simulation Driving the Transport Industry

LEAP Australia recently ran a webinar demonstrating some of the processes and factors to consider when embarking on the simulation driven design process. Watch the recording below: Earlier this year, Melbourne hosted the 2014 International Truck, Trailer & Equipment Show (ITTES) and – amidst declining automotive, mining and manufacturing industries in Australia – the event posted a fourth consecutive attendance record. The transport industry, like many other Australian industries has not been spared from the global economic downturn.  However, Australia is a population scattered over an expansive continent that is reliant on the transport industry to convey and deliver the basic living essentials.  Australia is also deeply immersed in a growing digital e-commerce lifestyle supported by efficient order-tracking systems, and a road-transport infrastructure that –…
